Pacific Northwest travel: Exploring Seattle’s historic side from Pioneer Square to deep underground

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:16:15 GMT

SEATTLE – It’s a rare weekend getaway that combines subterranean sidewalks, conflagrations and a Polar Bar, complete with glacier ice. Also walruses. A little Jules Verne. And the founder of Nordstrom.Let me explain.A century ago, private clubs devoted to scientific exploration were a thing – in real life, not just in Disney movies and “Around the World in 80 Days.” New York City’s Explorers Club opened in 1904, offering expedition support, as well as libraries, lounges and grand halls where intrepid explorers – the real-life Phileas Foggs of the world – could regale fellow members with their adventures in icy climes and jungles. Polar explorer Robert Peary’s New York club, the Peary Arctic Club, opened in 1898.Walrus cartouches adorn the exterior of the Arctic Club Hotel in Seattle. Americans are spotting more sharks in the water. Here’s why that’s a good thing

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:16:15 GMT

By Christina Maxouris | CNNIt’s that time of year again: the thick of summer when sharks have caught America’s attention.Unwanted interactions and shark sightings have made national headlines, and shark bites in popular tourist destinations have prompted temporary closures. In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul deployed dozens of shark-monitoring drones to parts of the state after Long Island authorities reported five non-fatal shark bites over two days.It may feel like you’ve been hearing about these large creatures more often this summer, and that just might be the case. Experts say that while estimating population numbers is difficult, there are signs that some shark populations off US coasts are slowly rebounding after decades of dramatic declines – the result of longtime conservation efforts across the country that are beginning to pay off.“Sharks are coming back. Their numbers are growing,” said Dr. Bob Hueter, chief scientist for OCEARCH, a nonprofit ocean research and education org...

#VanLife gets electrified: Six places to rent electric camper vans around the globe

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:16:15 GMT

By Elissa Garay | CNNThe road trip-meets-camping experience afforded by camper van travel is having a moment.Interest in these compact recreational vehicles, typically outfitted with home-away-from-home comforts like sleeping spaces and kitchenettes, has surged in recent years, bolstered by social media streams flooded with images and videos depicting idealized, nature-immersive #vanlife travel scenes.Plus, at the pandemic’s height, such self-contained vans – a sort of hotel room on wheels – were perceived to offer a means of travel that cut away at health risks.Yet, for the nature-loving travelers who tend to gravitate toward these outdoor adventure-ready vans, there’s a crisis of conscience at play, given that the oversize, gas-guzzling vehicles are known for spewing out carbon emissions, as a worsening global climate crisis unfolds.Just as movement toward electric vehicles (EVs) has swept the automobile industry—with fossil fuel-powered internal combustion engines being increasin...

Leaving California: Which state ‘culture’ is your best alternative?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:16:15 GMT

California appears to be a loser in the culture wars when it comes to interstate migration flows.Folks who talk about leaving the Golden State – or actually depart – say they no longer feel comfortable living in a state that’s dominated by big-city progressive thinking. So as a public service – and to show an economic lesson or two – this edition of my “Leaving California” columns will guide those people thinking about relocating to a place where the “culture” may be a better fit. Now, nothing can be harder to quantify than a fuzzy concept encompassing somebody’s philosophies of life. So, I’m going to skip the emotions and instead use seven benchmarks to gauge the cultural divide among the states. For departing Californians who don’t need any detailed analysis – my trusty spreadsheet says your No. 1 alternative is South Dakota. If that’s not to your liking, then head to North Dakota, Tennessee, Oklahoma or Idaho. And to avoid a really bad fit, do not go to New York, Connecticut, New Jer...

Musk threatens to sue researchers who documented the rise in hateful tweets

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:16:15 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has threatened to sue a group of independent researchers whose research documented an increase in hate speech on the site since it was purchased last year by Elon Musk.An attorney representing the social media site wrote to the Center for Countering Digital Hate on July 20 threatening legal action over the nonprofit’s research into hate speech and content moderation. The letter alleged that CCDH’s research publications seem intended “to harm Twitter’s business by driving advertisers away from the platform with incendiary claims.”Musk is a self-professed free speech absolutist who has welcomed back white supremacists and election deniers to the platform, which he renamed X earlier this month. But the billionaire has at times proven sensitive about critical speech directed at him or his companies. The center is a nonprofit with offices in the U.S. and United Kingdom. It regularly publishes reports on ...
