Nuggets lose to Nets, drop third straight despite Nikola Jokic’s monster triple-double Denver’s resiliency was pronounced and unequivocal. It just came too late.Had Nikola Jokic’s turnaround 3-pointer at the buzzer dropped, the Nuggets would’ve erased a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit that would’ve snapped their losing streak. Their defense would’ve been celebrated. Their toughness and tenacity championed.Instead, the Nuggets’ lethargic effort for most of the afternoon dug a hole too deep to recover from, resulting in a 122-120 loss to the Nets, their third consecutive loss. The defeat dropped them to 46-22 overall and 30-6 at home with a five-game road trip on deck.“It happens,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said, citing another lopsided quarter that swung the game. “… We probably spoiled a lot of people.”Jokic finished with 35 points, 20 rebounds and 11 assists, nearly willing his team back from its huge deficit. That it came with Jamal Murray injured — he didn’t play late due to left knee soreness — would’ve made it even more impressive...

North Carolina slides from preseason No. 1 to no NCAA bid

Published Thu, 21 Nov 2024 23:14:00 GMT

North Carolina slides from preseason No. 1 to no NCAA bid North Carolina has gone from starting the season at No. 1 to missing the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels on Sunday officially became the first top-ranked team in The Associated Press preseason poll to miss March Madness since the field’s expansion to 64 teams in 1985. The Tar Heels (20-13) returned four starters from a team that made a magical run last March to the NCAA title game under Hubert Davis, who was in his first season replacing retired Hall of Famer Roy Williams. The highlight was beating Duke in the Final Four — and sending Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski into retirement — in the first-ever NCAA Tournament meeting between the famed rivals.Yet little went to plan in a season of unfulfilled expectations, down to being listed as one of the first four teams outside the field. The Tar Heels were one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in program history, and that allowed defenders to sag down on AP All-ACC big man Armando Bacot inside and take away driving lanes while da...

Houston gets No. 1 seed in Midwest at expense of Kansas KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Houston received the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region for the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night, the selection committee rewarding the Cougars at the expense of Kansas, which had been hoping its national title defense would include a stop just down the road from its campus in Lawrence.Instead, the top-ranked Cougars will try to reach their hometown Final Four starting off in Birmingham, Alabama, but with the potential of playing a Sweet 16 game and a regional final in Kansas City, Missouri. The Cougars (31-3) lost to Memphis in the American Athletic Conference title game Sunday. They were playing without Marcus Sasser, the league player of the year and a likely All-American who strained his groin in the first half of their semifinals and will be a question mark leading up to Thursday’s opener against Northern Kentucky. It’s the first No. 1 seed for the Cougars since 1983, the height of their Phi Slama Jama era, when Hall of Fame coach Guy Lewis led Cl...

March Madness: Alabama, Houston, Kansas, Purdue the 1 seeds

March Madness: Alabama, Houston, Kansas, Purdue the 1 seeds The top overall seed, Alabama, has been on a roll despite the program being entangled in a developing murder case. Another No. 1 seed, defending national champion Kansas, has a coach coming out of the hospital and a team coming off a blowout loss. Yet another, Houston, just watched its best player go down in a heap with a scary injury. This year’s March Madness frontrunners might be anything but perfect, but the presence of these teams and all their questions at the top of the bracket could make for precisely what the NCAA wants its tournament to be – a perfectly unpredictable mess. Most of the drama in picking this year’s bracket was resolved far before Selection Sunday. Arizona State and Nevada made it off the bubble, as most expected, and into the 68-team field. Rutgers and Oklahoma State did not. Purdue, with 7-foot-4 Zach Edey leading the way, edged out UCLA for the fourth and final No. 1 seed. And in a decision most everyone saw coming, the selection committee left North Caroli...
