Dear Stella Kyriakides, commissioner for health and food safety,The ongoing revision of the EU Animal Welfare legislation represents a unique opportunity to propose legislation for ending the breeding and killing of animals on fur farms. Since there are no economically viable alternatives to the current housing system based on cages, a prohibition of fur farming is the only acceptable solution to ensure the welfare of fur animals. In May 2020, the European Commission adopted the Farm to Fork Strategy, announcing its intention to revise the current animal welfare legislation to align it with the latest scientific evidence. As scientists, we applaud this urgent initiative.
