If Denver Referred Question 2P look familiar, that’s because Denver voters twice before have had their say on a sales tax that provides tuition support for families seeking to enroll 4-year-olds in preschool. The new measure on ballots for the Nov. 7 election is aimed at authorizing the now-17-year-old tax in perpetuity, without a need to ask voters to renew it.A narrow margin of Denverites in 2006 approved the initial 0.12% sales tax that launched the Denver Preschool Program, setting a rate that amounts to 12 cents on a $100 purchase. That tax came with an expiration date 10 years later. In 2014, two years ahead of that, the Denver City Council referred a measure to the ballot that proposed to increase the tax to 0.15% — 15 cents on a $100 purchase — and extend the expiration by another decade, to 2026. Voters approved that measure with 55% support. Now, three years ahead of time, the City Council is asking voters to vote on the tax a final time — unless there...PHOTOS: Denver Nuggets hoist championship banner, open new season at Ball Arena

The Irvine Police Department is investigating a brawl that broke out between two soccer teams that brought spectators, parents and family members onto the field and into the melee over the weekend. The Saturday night, Oct. 21, fight at Great Park in Irvine reportedly came at the end of the game between Club Garrafones from South Los Angeles and Irvine Zeta FC II, both of whom are a part of the professional development United Premier Soccer League. The nearly four minute video obtained by KTLA shows the two teams and others in a violent altercation that moved back and forth across the field, with several people taking blows to the face, as well as one person ganged up on and kicked while they were down. Bryan Wallace, head coach of Irvine Zeta, believes his lower-ranked and younger team’s upset victory over the undefeated Club Garrafones is what sparked tempers and led to a dispute between two players that turned into an out-and-out fight that cleared the bleachers.  ...The top 10 most expensive home sales in Los Gatos, reported the week of Oct. 16

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The first major snowstorm of the season is expected to hit the northern Cascades, Rockies and North Dakota this week, sending residents searching for their winter coats, gloves and boots and facing much different driving conditions after a warm fall in many places. The National Weather Service is warning of hazardous travel on snowy mountain passes and ice on some highways when snow initially melts and then freezes as road temperatures drop. The storm was forecast to come in waves, beginning with rain that fell Tuesday at lower elevations in Washington and snow in the mountains and spreading snow across northern Idaho, Montana, northwestern Wyoming and North Dakota into Friday morning.Cold air moving down from northwestern Canada has combined with a moist Pacific weather system, leading to freezing temperatures and snowfall amounts up to 18 inches (46 centimeters) in the mountains of Montana, the National Weather Service forecasts. WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans chose Rep. Mike Johnson as their latest nominee for House speaker late Tuesday, hours after an earlier pick, Rep. Tom Emmer, abruptly withdrew in the face of opposition from Donald Trump and hardline GOP lawmakers.Johnson of Louisiana, a lower-ranked member of the House GOP leadership team, becomes the fourth Republican nominee after Emmer and the others fell short in what has become an almost absurd cycle of political infighting since Kevin McCarthy’s ouster as GOP factions jockey for power. Refusing to unify, far-right members won’t accept a more traditional speaker and moderate conservatives don’t want a hardliner. During private balloting, Johnson won a majority, but ahead of an expected House floor vote Wednesday the nominee will need almost all Republicans to win the gavel. “Mike! Mike! Mike!” lawmakers chanted at a press conference afterward, surrounding Johnson and posing for selfies in a show of support.Three weeks on, the Republicans hav...Britney Spears dice que está “recuperando la vida” en su nuevo libro de memorias

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An off-duty airline pilot riding in an extra cockpit seat on a Horizon Air flight said “I’m not OK” just before trying to cut the engines midflight and later told police he had been struggling with depression, according to charging documents made public Tuesday.State prosecutors in Oregon filed 83 counts of attempted murder against Alaska Airlines pilot Joseph David Emerson, 44, on Tuesday just before he appeared in court, with his attorney, Noah Horst, entering not guilty pleas on his behalf. Federal prosecutors meanwhile charged Emerson with interfering with a flight crew, which can carry up to 20 years in prison.According to a probable cause statement filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court, Emerson told Port of Portland police following his arrest that he had been struggling with depression, that a friend had recently died and that he had taken psychedelic mushrooms about 48 hours before he attempted to cut the engines. He also said he had not slept in more...Latest news
