SF Giants push back Alex Cobb’s next start

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:52:05 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — Alex Cobb won’t pitch in his scheduled turn through the rotation this weekend, a concerning development for one of the Giants’ only three starting pitchers and for a team on the outside of the playoff picture looking in with 22 games remaining.Despite the three-game set against the Rockies looming as a must-win to maintain their fading postseason hopes, the Giants’ No. 2 starter isn’t scheduled to take the ball. Kyle Harrison will make his second start in front of the home fans on Friday, Logan Webb will start Saturday, and the club is listing Sunday’s starter as TBA.Cobb last pitched Sunday in San Diego, when he lasted only three innings while allowing four runs on two homers in a loss to the Padres. The clunker came five days after throwing a career-high 131 pitches in a complete game, coming one out shy of a no-hitter.Afterward, while Cobb said he wanted the ball on regular rest, he acknowledged it was “very fair to second guess...

Football video games are a time capsule

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:52:05 GMT

Sports video games are like time capsules — or portals to the past. With their rosters, playbooks and features, they capture and preserve a season in ones and zeroes, and at a press of a button, they bring that past to life.Since Nintendo’s release of 1989’s Tecmo Bowl, games have come to change how fans understand and interact with America’s favorite sport. The first great football game didn’t even have the NFL license when it was released. Tecmo Bowl’s teams were named by city, not team, but featured the colors of the corresponding NFL team. What they did have, though, was the NFL Players Association license, and that was enough. Fans could play as Joe Montana and throw to Jerry Rice. The first breakout star in NFL video games was the then-Los Angeles Raiders’ Bo Jackson. The running back was an unstoppable force in the game, and the way experts used him to outrun tacklers made him look otherworldly. Although his football career was cut shor...

Newsom believes U.S. Customs and Border Protection's narcotic search operations require further support in light of nearly a six-fold increase in the amount of seized fentanyl in California last year. The troops will operate vehicle X-ray systems used for detecting the transportation and concealment of narcotics and will not be involved with the interdiction or processing of migrants. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State began last season with a shutout of South Dakota, ran roughshod through Missouri in Week 2, then faced a team from Tulane that the Wildcats were expected to beat at home. They were dumped 17-10 and left searching for answers. The Wildcats quickly found them, beating Oklahoma the following week and rolling to the Big 12 title game, where they beat College Football Playoff participant TCU for the championship. Those answers have stuck with the No. 15 Wildcats through a shutout of Southeast Missouri State to open the season and with Troy visiting Saturday — a team much like the Green Wave, talented and successful.“We don’t want to have a moment like that where we have to kind of have a little reality check to learn from,” said Kansas State quarterback Will Howard, who threw for 297 yards and two scores while running for a touchdown and catching a TD pass in the 45-0 romp over the Redhawks. “We don’t want to have, like, a hiccup to come back...

New Jersey failed veterans in state-run homes hit by dozens of COVID-19 deaths, federal report says

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:52:05 GMT

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Widespread dysfunction at New Jersey’s two state-run veterans homes left them unprepared to keep residents safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, violating their constitutional rights to reasonable care while in state custody, a scathing report by the U.S Justice Department found Thursday. The 43-page document paints a disturbing picture of failures at the homes in Menlo Park and Paramus where dozens of deaths occurred early in the outbreak. It said poor communication, lack of staff competency and other issues led to the coronavirus spreading “virtually unchecked throughout the facilities.” Among the findings: The homes failed to group residents into cohorts according to their exposure to COVID-19, resulting in the commingling of infected and uninfected people; they didn’t properly use personal protective gear; they failed to communicate effectively internally and did not maintain improvements achieved after the U.S. Veterans Affairs Departments came in ...
