There was a time when rock ‘n’ roll and country were at war with one another. Your average rural music lover was either tuned to a radio station that poured out soaring electric guitar solos and thundering bass lines or to twangy fare that was one pealing pedal steel guitar note this side of campfire folk. Then up from Australia came Keith Urban to bridge the divide. He arrived in Nashville late last century to forge a truce between devotees of Led Zeppelin and Merle Haggard. He built his music on the traditional country structures, but loved to insert thrilling guitar solos into his tunes that would be equally at home on classic rock radio. If anyone among the 13,421 at Saturday night’s sold-out Urban show at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand came doubting that his distinctive hybrid has been a success, such misgivings were surely dispelled by an exhilarating 95-minute set during which the 55-year-old Nashville veteran seemingly exhausted every ounce of energy he had available. CHICAGO — Oakland A’s manager Mark Kotsay remembered sitting alone in the stands as a 5-year-old growing up near Los Angeles and watching his dad Steve pitch in a softball game.A car pulled up behind left field and someone in the vehicle started shooting. As the bullets sprayed the field, Steve Kotsay sprung into action. A police officer, he tackled his son to protect him.“It’s just the memory I have of being at a softball game and my dad,” Mark Kotsay said. “Things like that happened in my neighborhood.”Mark Kotsay looked back on that memory on Saturday, one day after there was a shooting at Guaranteed Rate Field during Oakland’s 12-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox — raising questions about security at the ballpark and what exactly happened.Saturday’s game went on as scheduled, with the A’s losing 6-2 to the White Sox, who won for the second time in six games.“For something like that to happen, it does kind of raise the awareness of safety and stuff like that for us playe...Stanford gymnasts Asher Hong, Khoi Young take top spots at U.S. championships

SAN JOSE — Asher Hong was beaming Saturday night as he stood at the top of the podium with a gold medal around his neck. “It’s awesome,” said Hong, the new U.S. all-around champion. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work… just to get to this point of feeling consistent and comfortable with all of these routines. To see it pay off in the end is very relieving.” Hong captured his first national all-around title, recording a two-day score of 170.930, a full point better than his Stanford teammate Khoi Young, who finished in second. Hong led the competition after posting an all-around score of 85.615 out of Day 1. He got off to a slow start Saturday. After hitting his high bar routine, Hong experienced a rough stretch on floor and pommel horse. But he bounced back, using a high-powered vault, strong-and-controlled ring routine as well as a solid parallel bar performance to seal his win.
