You don’t have to be a Brit or even a Harry and Meghan follower to know that May 6 is Coronation Day in the United Kingdom. King Charles III will be crowned in a ceremony at London’s Westminster Abbey that day, and the news — about the carriages, the crowns, the king’s very heavy robes and the reams of regal rumors — has been everywhere.A coronation is a solemn occasion, of course, but it’s also an excuse for a national knees-up. (That’s a lively party to us Yanks.) Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation was 60 years ago, so this is a big day for British expats, who likely still enjoy the Coronation Chicken — a curry-tinged chicken salad — served at the festivities in 1953. (And in case you’re wondering, King Charles is serving Coronation Quiche.)In honor of next week’s historic event, British expat-owned businesses across the Bay Area are celebrating with parties and special menus. Yes, there will be Coronation Chicke...Here’s everything you need to plan a road trip through the beautiful Southwest

When you’re from California, it’s easy to think that some of the world’s most beautiful and wild, rugged places are right here in our lovely state. But while the Golden State has plenty of incredible scenery to offer, both back in those Wild West days as well as now, the landscapes across America’s Southwest are some of the most spectacular to be found anywhere on the planet.A road trip is a perfect way to see our favorite special spots in the Southwest — Nevada, Utah and Arizona — where you can see ghost towns, hoodoos, natural arches, sandstone spectacles, dark-sky stars and a really huge hole in the ground. Before you begin, consider purchasing an annual national parks pass at the first park you enter. That $80 pass gets everyone in your car into every national park for a full year. You don’t have to be an American citizen to buy an annual pass, but if you are, and you’re age 62-plus, buy your lifetime pass for $80 and never again pay to enter a U.S. national par...Former MTV star Bam Margera wanted in Pennsylvania after fleeing an alleged crime scene

FLINT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A local official in Michigan accused of breaking a seal on a ballot box in her own election to ensure that votes couldn’t be recounted was sentenced Monday to six months of house arrest.Kathy Funk, a Democrat, must wear an electronic monitor and also write a public apology for her actions in 2020 as the Flint Township clerk. In January, Funk pleaded no contest to misconduct in office. A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is used as such at sentencing.Funk had won the Democratic nomination by just 79 votes out of about 5,300. A recount was not conducted, and she subsequently won the general election that fall. Investigators say she sabotaged the ballot box after the primary election, an act that would make those ballots ineligible for a recount.Funk, 59, initially told state police she thought someone had broken into the township hall and damaged the seal on the ballot cannister. At her sentencing, Judge Mark Latchana admonished Funk for...FIFA confirms 4 in 2027 Women’s World Cup hosting race

ZURICH (AP) — Four contenders are competing to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, FIFA confirmed on Monday, days after the joint United States-Mexico bid entered the race. Brazil, South Africa and the European project teaming Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands were previously announced as intended candidates trying to win a vote scheduled for May next year. All four projects come from countries “with a strong football tradition,” FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura said in a statement. Germany, South Africa and Brazil hosted three straight editions of the men’s World Cup from 2006 to 2014, and the 2026 men’s edition will be played in the U.S., Mexico and Canada. The potential hosts met a first FIFA deadline last week and must sign a bidding agreement by May 19. FIFA wants the official bid plan documents by Dec. 8. At least one of the four should be left off the official ballot paper.FIFA previously said its 37-member ruling council chaired by president Gianni Infantino ...Twitter verification reappears, but some disavow Musk’s mark

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Celebrities and other high-profile Twitter users are once again being verified by the social media platform and they don’t know why the blue check marks reappeared — nor do they seem too happy about it.Twitter removed the blue marks last week from accounts that don’t pay a monthly fee. But the check marks mysteriously returned for many highly followed accounts over the weekend, leading some prominent users to disavow what’s become a divisive symbol of Twitter owner Elon Musk’s erratic changes to the platform.Accounts belonging to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bette Midler, gymnast Simone Biles Owens, writer Neil Gaiman and rapper Lil Nas X were among the users — all with more than 1 million followers — who took to Twitter to make clear they didn’t pay to get their blue check back.“On my soul i didn’t pay for twitter blue, u will feel my wrath tesla man!” wrote the rapper who has 8 million followers.
